For many teenagers across the Georgia coast, the "invisible sentence" begins the moment a gavel falls, triggering an immediate wave of emotional and financial instability at home. The Bridge Project in Savannah was founded to address this silent crisis, filling the void left by an absent parent with specialized counseling and practical career development. Nia, a high school junior, has lived this reality for five years while her mother served a long-term sentence, often feeling like she had to carry the weight of her family alone.
Through the project, she was connected with a professional mentor who encouraged her interest in the legal system, transforming her pain into a pursuit of justice. Nia recently secured a prestigious summer internship at a leading local law firm, a position usually reserved for college students.
"The Bridge Project taught me that I don’t have to hide my story or be ashamed of my mother’s situation," Nia explains. "I’ve learned to use my experiences to fuel my ambition and advocate for others who feel unheard".
